A bit of Richmond Hill history.
Richmond Hill is all about the location and circumstance. The road leading to Richmond Hill was initially planned for military and strategic reasons by Lord Simcoe (founder of Toronto), lieutenant-governor of Upper Canada. His strategy was to secure and maintain communication and travel between the young colony of York and Michilimackinac, (northern most part of the state of Michigan). The British relied on the fur trading post of Michilimackinac and the strategic aspect of this was the importance of maintaining a safe route to supplies away from the southern part of Ontario where the United States were beginning to challenge the British and their retreat into Upper Canada.
Part of Simcoe’s strategy was to build a route north to meet up with the bottom of Lake Simcoe and to go west (Dundas St.) towards Detroit. Gradually, the route north was carved from York, up to Langstaff, (named after Dr. Langstaff, John (1774-1865) settled at the crossroads of Yonge and Highway 7. There, the third toll stop of what is known as Yonge st. today was erected just before 1800 and represented the progression of Yonge St at that time. Gradually the road was constructed all the way to the Holland River where the area of what became Richmond Hill grew to house the travellers on stage coach by building several inns. Along with the settlement for travellers, churches were erected and eventually Richmond Hill became the robust settlement that grew to what it is today, a flourishing city. Most authorities, including the Canadian Permanent Committee on Geographical Names report the honouring of Charles Lennox as the origin of the name, Richmond Hill. He was the 4th Duke of Richmond and made a visit to the area on July 13, 1819.
